Tartan Trews.

Tartan Trews are a Scottish traditional trousers going back as far as the 1500;s and mostly used in the winter when it was too cold for a kilt. Mostly today they are used by soldiers of Scottish Regiments now disbanded,The Royal Regiment of Scotland or for formal occasions by civilians and make a great alternative to a kilt. Trews have a high back and site higher than normal trousers, with braces to keep them sitting comfortable.They can be worn with a waistcoat of highland jacket or a tweed . .

Trews Made In Scotland.

The Royal Regiment of Scotland is made up of all former Scottish infantry regiments and wear Trews on some occasions. In the past Trews were part of the Highland tradition and not, like today the Lowlands . So when Lowland regiments were established around the 1660 -1680 the Lowland regiments wore British uniform and did not want to wear anything to do with tartan or bagpipes. The tartan and bagpipes, to them was foreign and had no meaning to them. At around 1739 Highland regiments started to be formed and they preferred to wear the clothes that were familiar to them. They wore belted plaids that were unfamiliar to a lot of recruits so adopted the kilt. Trews became more popular when not on duty and later on duty. Later the Highland regiment wore tartan Trews in hotter climates. Our trousers are made in Scotland at a local factory with skilled crafts people.

Highland Dress.

In 1822, when King George 4 visited Scotland he ordered the highland dress to be re-established for the 72nd highland regiment
They started wearing the the Highland bonnet, the red coat, adapted and the Trews. As the use of Trews by the Lowland regiments became the norm the wearing of Trews became fashionable with the civilian population.Eventually the Trews became to be know as a lowland dress. Now anyone can and do wear. Trews at weddings and festivals and as a fashion statement.
